Jiangsu benefits economically from its proximity to Shanghai, and its natural network of rivers and ports in the southern part of the province. Its largest industries include electronics, chemicals, textiles, and general manufacturing. The electronics industry in Jiangsu alone accounts for more than 70 percent of the industry’s total revenue in China.

In 2009, Jiangsu generated a GDP over USD 498 billion. In 2010, its GDP grew nearly 20 percent to USD 596.8 billion, the second largest GDP in China. In direct correlation, Jiangsu is also recognized as the second largest investment location. In 2009 Jiangsu utilized USD 25.3 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). In 2010, Jiangsu’s FDI grew to USD 28.5 billion. Many of the world’s top 500 companies, such as Samsung and Hitachi have projects in the province. Jiangsu is known within China for its high level of education. Jiangsu has over 1.2 million students and 119 universities (more than any other province in China) that provide a large skilled workforce.
