Xiamen’s economy has grown significantly since it was named as one of China’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the early 1980’s. Xiamen’s major industries are fishing, financial services, shipbuilding, food processing, textiles, tanning, machine tool manufacturing, telecommunications, and chemical industries. Its economy is bolstered by its massive port (the eighth largest in China), the Xiangyu Free Trade Zone, and various preferential policies for foreign investors resulting from its status as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Xiamen serves as an important financial and industrial center, generating a GDP of USD 23 billion in 2009. In 2010, Xiamen’s GDP grew 39 percent to USD 32 billion. More than 1000 foreign enterprises have invested in Xiamen, including 38 Fortune 500 companies, contributing to its 2009 FDI utilization of USD 1.687 billion, USD 300 million more from its 2007 FDI.
