Macau Manufacturing & Investment Information

Macau is known as the Las Vegas of Asia due to its heavy reliance on tourism and gaming revenue. It is China’s second Special Administrative Region (after Hong Kong), and has been granted certain legislative powers and other statutes of autonomy that differentiate it from mainland China.  Macau’s 31 casinos attract over 23 million visitors each year, bringing in USD 13.7 billion of gross revenue from gaming alone in 2008, a majority of its GDP (more than Las Vegas).

Macau & Foreign Investment

Over 50 percent of Macau’s GDP (USD 26.4 billion in 2010) came from gambling, but it does have a small presence in textile, garment, and shoe manufacturing.  Consequently, Macau has seen its miniscule FDI rise significantly in years past.  FDI has gone from USD 800 million in 2008 to USD 2.765 billion in 2009.  While a majority of that is likely investment towards casino’s and tourism, Macau is seeing improvement in the eyes of investors. Macau has ten universities and nearly 20 percent of the population has a college degree.
